Store wine bottles correctly - in the wine refrigerator

This very special kitchen appliance is not just for wine lovers and sommeliers. The wine refrigerator is also suitable for the "normal person" who drinks a glass of wine with dinner every now and then. If you don't want to miss out on good taste, you should store your wine correctly. That means not just in the refrigerator or carelessly in boxes in the cellar. There you run the risk of the wine losing quality. It becomes undrinkable, bland and dry. There is no such risk in the wine refrigerator. That is because the temperatures there are ideal, which are beneficial for cooling wine.

Types of refrigerators for wine

Wine refrigerators are available in different models and types. The difference starts with the terminology alone. They are also called climate cabinets, wine temperature control cabinets or simply wine cabinets. What they all have in common is that they create ideal conditions for the short-term and long-term storage of wine bottles. Wine refrigerator types are then fundamentally differentiated based on how they are installed.

Freestanding wine refrigerator

The freestanding wine cabinet is freestanding and can be placed flexibly in the kitchen or elsewhere. This is a compact device or a large highlight that can be placed in the living area. Either way, a freestanding wine cabinet is a good purchase for displaying wine accordingly.

Built-in wine refrigerator

In contrast to the freestanding wine cabinet, the built-in wine refrigerator is built into the kitchen cabinet. Similar to a classic built-in refrigerator. It is also possible to place the device as a substructure wine cabinet. It is then pushed under the worktop, but retains its own front.

Purchasing criteria for the wine refrigerator

Regardless of the type, a wine refrigerator has some special features. Here are the most important features, including dimensions & volume and the ideal cooling conditions.

How big is a wine refrigerator?

Dimensions & volume.

Wine cabinets can be of different sizes. They are available as very small models with a width of only about 50 cm. But large wine refrigerators, similar to refrigerators, are also available on the market. The decisive question before making a purchase is therefore always: How many wine bottles do you want to store? Is a small wine refrigerator sufficient for occasional wine enjoyment? Or do you want to store large quantities of wine?

How long does a wine cooler last?

Lifespan.

Wine refrigerators have an average lifespan of ten to fifteen years. This makes them comparable to traditional refrigerators. However, always pay attention to the functionality of the devices. As soon as an important protection is inactive, the wine cabinet can no longer fully perform its function. The wine may then go bad more quickly.

What is the ideal temperature for wine?

Temperature setting.

Depending on the grape variety, wines should be stored at different temperatures. A wine refrigerator usually has a temperature of +5 to +20 degrees Celsius. However, you should note that red wine and white wine, for example, should be stored at different temperatures. Wine climate cabinets differentiate between different climate zones. Red wine is then stored in a different climate zone than white wine. Around 18 degrees Celsius is ideal for red wine. 5 degrees Celsius for sparkling wine and champagne.

Under what conditions is it best to store wine?

Humidity.

In order for wine to mature and be stored for a long time, it needs other conditions. Not only a certain temperature, but also a certain humidity. This prevents the wine and corks from drying out and should be around 50%. With some models, you can also switch on a fan to achieve the ideal air conditions.

Tips for storing wine in the refrigerator

Here are a few more tips for storing wine bottles.

  • It is best to store wine lying down. This way the cork stays moist on the inside and does not become brittle
  • UV radiation reduces the quality of the wine. This is why wine refrigerators are equipped with UV protection doors. Storage in other places should be cool and with little light
  • Also protect the wine from odors and scents. Wine climate cabinets have special filters that optimize air circulation
  • Functions such as PowerCooling (Liebherr) or (Miele) work in a similar way to super cooling in the refrigerator and cool the contents down to the perfect temperature in no time at all
  • Open wine bottles last 1-3 days
  • Because wine naturally contains preservatives such as alcohol and acid, it has a very long shelf life. How long it lasts depends on how it is stored and what grape variety it is
  • Wine with high acidity usually lasts longer

Wine refrigerator accessories

There are also special accessories for wine refrigerators. Here are some examples.

The Miele wine refrigerator

Miele wine refrigerators not only impress with numerous accessories, as you may have already seen above. They also have practical functions and a wide variety of model types (freestanding wine cabinets, built-in wine cabinets and undercounter wine cabinets). Many of the devices have integrated Active AirCelan filters, which consist of activated carbon and natural chitosan and effectively filter odors. In addition, the wine coolers have separate temperature zones that can be individually regulated. The DynaCool fan circulates the air inside to create an excellent climate for storing wine bottles.
